What's wrong with Canon? I have had the best luck/quality from them
over HP, Epson and Lexmark.

Excluding canon, who else makes printers to print on cd/dvds ?

Assuming consumer level, and assuming inkjet, and not Canon, there is
Epson.

There is also products by Primera, but these exclusing their z1 thermal
ribbon printer they are in the $1000+ range.

I'm sure there are a few others who employ parts from Lexmark, HP, or
Epson, but i'm going to assume a general purpose printer and not a
label duplicator.

The only other consumer type ive been able to find is epson. i would have
expected there to be more, esp from hp

HP is based in the US, who would in all fairness have to shell out
money to Phillips to produce such a device. Obviously Epson does this
and does this for a printer that sells for under $100 typicaly
speaking. Canon just doesn't sell this feature in the US.

But unless you want a thermal ribbon, lightscribe/Labelflash, sticky
labels, or some mid-range or high-end solution, it's just Canon and
Epson. Canon works pretty well.... though I prefer Epson's ink but
consider the printer to be more flacky.

In Germany there are these "compatables"

But you gotta take out the chip from the OEM tanks and plop them on the
compatables, and you loose your ablity to meter. I know nothing about
this company other than they spammed Steve's Forums at one point.

that is a blessing. read a post from aron and you will see what i mean.

In standard consumer inkjet printers, Epson is your only other choice.
There are other commercial versions for higher speed or multiple
printing, or using other than inkjet inks, but these are usually rather
costly and are industrial designs.

It looks like you can get the "Verity OptiPrinter Pro" It looks like
a hacked HP.. a hacked hp consumer inkjet sold medium-duty model. If
you have $1500 to spend and gotta have HP, this is it. In fact this
company seems to be selling Epson r200s and r220s bundled with 3rd
party software.

Not that I have any experence with these people.
