Printers dependent on IE

I'm currently using Windows 98se but plan on migrating to Linux in the
near future. However I've noticed that many printers are dependent on
Internet Explorer 5+ to work. W98se ships with IE 5.0 which is often
too old.

Are there any printers that don't depend on IE? I only need a basic
inkjet color one. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You seem to have misunderstood something.
Printers need software in order to work, and IE
is one of the software applications you can use
for printing. But you do not need IE to print a document
from WordPerfect, MS Word, Quattro, Adobe Acrobat
Reader etc.

oh dear .....

Hi Joe, IE is not normally essential to run the printer. However these
days printer manuals are often supplied on CD in html format. Often the
html includes "features" such as ActiveX controls which need IE5 and
up. So IE5 is not really required to run the printer but only to read
the manual.

What you really need to look for are printers with Linux drivers -
these include some Lexmark and HP models (and others which I am sure
you can find). Unfortunately not many printers come with Linux drivers,
many will only ever work with Windows as they use the Windows operating
system to work, and printers with Linux drivers can be more expensive.

I think you've misinterpreted the situation. There are no printers
that are tied to Internet Explorer. However, you will find printers
that are slangly called "winPrinters". These are dumb as dirt
printers that offload their logic functions to the computer via a code
heavy driver. This isn't a problem if you're using the latest OS from
Microsoft, but if you have an OS that's a little less than mainstream
(eg. Linux), an older version of Windows, or an older discontinued
printer, you may find the situation fairly frustrating.

That said, the situation has improved a whole lot, and any printers
are supported in Linux through the CUPS printing system.

Here's a list. Note that it's likely incomplete, as new drivers
appear very frequently:

I agree, you do have freedom of expression, what you do not have is the
right to re-direct posts which criticise your freedom of expression no
matter how worded. This group had the right to read my remarks about you as
this is my freedom of expression and the sooner you take this onboard the
sooner I will stop replying to all your posts in the manner I do at this
time. You may continue to use expressions like "irritating" but if so expect
much more of the same in reply. I believe my expression to you was ****wit,
well at this moment that still stands. You are to me standing side by side
with Measekite.

I checked it today.
No current Canon Inkjets supported. There might be a purchaseable 3rd party
driver .

As I mentioned, the list is *INCOMPLETE*. Just because a printer isn't
listed doesn't mean it doesn't work with CUPS. Generally, you can use
the driver for the printer's previous generation equivalent. For
example, the S-series listed is analogous to the current I-series.
Some of the bigger Linux distros do the legwork and idiot proofing for
you, but on occasion, you have to do some experimenting. A bit of
online research will help in narrowing it down.
