Printers appear offline at startup in Windows XP

We have just installed Windows XP (Home Edition) and both printers appear
"offline" at startup every time. The right-click "use online" option works,
and the printers remain online until the next time the machine is restarted.
The USB cables are firmly attached, and both printers are turned on prior to
powering up the CPU.

I can't find any reference to this in the newsgroup or MS KB. Any ideas?

I am comfortable modifying the registry if there's a way to force windows to
always use the printer online...

Thanks!
