Steve

I'm hoping someone can help. Here's the deal. This
weekend I came up to my computer and I could not print.
I checked and both of my printers and they were both
nowhere to be found on my computer; they had magically
uninstalled themselves.

I called Dell and they walked me through some things, but
nothing worked. I can't seem to figure out how to call
Microsoft to ask for help. What I do know is that my
Print Spooler is not started and will not start no matter
how I try. Also, the option to "add a new printer" gives
me an error message.

Is there anything, short of reinstalling XP, that can
help my problem?

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
Double-click the Printer Spooler service, and then change the startup type to
Automatic. This sets the Spooler service to start automatically when you restart the
computer.
If you want to start the spooler service immediately, click the Start button under
the Service Status field.

I have tried both methods. The Print Spooler is set to
automatic and remains in automatic when I restart. When I
try to start immediately, I get error 1068.

I resolved the problem by following the instructions in
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 324757. The description
of the problem per the article did not fit mine exactly,
but I decided to try it. Both of my printers have been
reinstalled and are functioning normally. I am not
certain that reinstalling the printers resolved all the
issues related to why the printers disappeared in the
first place, but we take what we can get. Onward to the
next glitch!

Thanks for all the advice. I tried the 324757 article
and it did not work. I'll keep plugging along.

Yes Lexmark printers, an X74-75 and an X65. I'll try the
website and cross my fingers. Unfortunately, I'll hope
for the worst because the error didn't come from
uninstalling the printers, they just magically
disappeared one day and now the Print Spooler will not
restart.
