Printer Troubles

Parallel Printer Port (not USB)

I recently bought a Canon i560 printer. I installed it
without incident and it ran like a charm. After a week or
so, it just disapeared off my computer. The driver was
still there, but windows didn't seem to detect it at all.
It didn't show up under the printers list. I uninstalled
the driver, and tried to reinstall it, but the driver
installation program would just say "Printer could not be
installed". I tried installing it through windows, and
got basically the same error message. I think that it
disappeared after I ran windows update, but that may not
be the case. Also, plug and play does not seem to detect
it, I don't know if this makes a difference. Canon tech
support has been basically useless. Thanks for the help!

Buy a USB cable.

Install the software, do NOT connect the printer until the software tells
you to do so.

I don't know - is it? Did you follow Cari's other instructions to determine
that?! Or did you just assume that's what she was telling you?
 
No, but I am saying it was designed for USB and will work much better with
USB than it ever will on LPT.
 
For the newer canon printers.
When the printer does not respond or is not sensed.
Uninstall the printer driver. Reboot with the printer disconnected.
Uninstall the USB drivers. (You may need to use safe mode to do this.)
Reboot, and allow the USB subsystem to reinstall. Reboot. Some systems
require more than one reboot to recognize and install all the USB drivers.
(Mine has dual mode USB port controllers. The first reboot USB install loads
the basic USB drivers, and the second loads the USB 2.0 drivers, or
configures for 2.0 operation, (never bothered to figure out exactly what
occurs, since it works.)
Finally, when the USB system is stable, install the printer driver. Usually
the driver install is started with the printer disconnected, and connected
only when prompted. Follow any instructions/prompts exactly during the
install. The usual worst case is to need to do a manual edit in the registry
to remove leftovers related to the previous printer driver install. Canon
may provide a cleanup/remove utility to do this for your printer.
Reboot. The USB drivers will likely reinstall
