Printer switching trays

Hello,

all common laser printers I know have a typical behaviour: If the
selected tray is out of paper, an other tray is used. In some
enviroments, this is disturbing, for example in an office with
different formulas in different trays. Is there a way to prevent this?
Can this be done with a driver, or are there printers around not doing
this?

I'm very thankful for every hint.

Greeting,
Christoph

Both of my laser printers can be configured at their respective control
panels to *not* switch trays. My Xerox printer can be told not to
switch trays on any particular job by sending it the correct PS
sequence (the driver would do this). You should be able to find the
proper "snippet" of PostScript code in the PPD file for the printer
that you're using. IIRC, the feature is called "trayswitching", but
YMMV.

I've never had a laser that has done this. The HP IIP I had, had two
trays and wouldn't change automagically, my IIIP only has one tray, the
QMS 2200 I had had two trays and didn't, my Xerox Phaser 8200 has two
trays and didn't, my Canon CLC950 has four trays and doesn't.
