I'm uainf XP Home SP 1. Printer is HP Deskjet 5550. Suddenly it
won't print. Lights work, system tray icon shows up, application
shows pages are sent to printer. Then lights stop flashing. No
noise. No printing. No error messages!

I'm looking for my installation CD, in four cases of CD's, and can't
find it.

Can I get the needed files off the internet somewhere? Note that I'm
using a dialup.

May not be the problem, of course.

Hardware drivers almost always are downloaded from the manufacturer, in this
case it is HP. As to the problem, have you tried printing a test page (check
your HP manual for the procedure)? You don't necessarily need the computer
to do that. Are you out of ink? Is there a paper jam?

Good luck.

Same problem yesterday but different printer. Pull the power plug and then
plug it back in. Resets the whole thing.

I wish I'd gotten your post earlier -- I downloaded all the HP drivers
from the internet (Dialup = 2 hours). Then I fiddled with installing.
That didn't work right! Then I turned the damned thing off, went to
bed, and when I turned it on, Windows "Found New Hardware" and I
selected the SAME OLD HP.inf file. Success! I've got my driver back.

I will remember your advice for the future, however.
