Printer Spooler Error

I am receiving the error messages, posted belows, in the
System Event Log. These errors seem to occur at random
and I have not been able to nail it down to a particular
driver, or print monitor. Whenever the print spooler
stops after the error, I am unable to start the spooler
successfully until I clear the spool directory of its
contents. I have verified the contents of what was being
printed when the spooler crashes and the spooled document
is not always from the same application.

This is occurring on my Windows 2000 Server with SP4
print/file server. I have 13 printer shared out through
this server. The error occurs randomly and does not seem
to be happening when any particular printer or document is
being printed.

I have seen several TechNet articles related to applying
the latest service pack and using the Windows 2000 printer
drivers. This is the case with all but one of my
printers, a Brother HL-1440. I have removed this printer
and its driver and the problem still occurs randomly.

Event ID: 7031
The Print Spooler service terminated unexpectedly. It has
done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will
be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

Event ID: 2510
The server service was unable to map error code 1722.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as this has
gotten to be a rather annoying problem.

Thanks,
Wayne Jones

I have been haveing this same problem. Microsoft has a
hotfix called "free x86" that will fix this problem on a
sp3 system. search for "kb820550" in microsoft support. I
have not found a way to download the hotfix though. Since
my 2000 came with my server, microsoft wants me to go to
the manufacturer for support. Can't see trying to explain
to some person in India that I need a specific hotfix from
microsoft to fix my system. Do you have any suggestions
about how to get the hotfix?
Thanks
Frank

Bear in mind that you may be seeing the same event logged as KB article
820550 mentions, but the cause may be something else and the hotfix may not
help you.

As I understand it, hotfixes are not available for download and must be
obtained via contact with Microsoft Support. This is most likely to minimize
the distribution of them, as they are often released quickly with little
regression testing. They are designed to solve a specific problem.

If Windows came with your computer, the vendor generally has an agreement
with Microsoft to provide support for it. If Microsoft has told you to call
the vendor in India, then that is what you must do. And the vendor must
provide you with support and hotfixes. If you try that and it doesn't work
out, I would contact Microsoft again and maybe they can enforce the
agreement or provide you with the hotfix themselves. But I would not expect
Microsoft to help based on the information "I can't see trying to explain it
to some person in India". I would go back to them only if you have tried and
failed the proper procedure.
