My printer has worked fine until this morning when everything that I attempt
to print will show an error message. We are using Windows XP and have a
Canon S500 printer. The first message at the Print Status reads "Collecting
Printer Status for about 30 seconds and then the error message at the Print
Status reads "Operator Error". I have turned the printer off, shut the
computer down, just about everthing that I can think of doing except throw it
out the window. The light on the printer will flash orange 5 or six times
and then stay green for a few seconds. If anyone has any suggestions I would
greatly appreciate it!!!!

Thanks!

Count the flashes.
From the S500 user manual:
2 flashes: out of paper, paper jam or paper feed error
3 flashes: paper jam
4 flashes: empty ink tank
6 flashes: no print head installed
7 flashes: defective print head (forget to take the tape off?)
8 flashes: waste ink tank almost full -- Canon says that once the waste ink tank
is full, you won't be able to print and must "call for service"
power light flashing alternate green and orange: turn off; disconnect power
supply; reconnect; turn on; if error persists, call Canon
