Printer Sharing

I have a computer running XP Pro. It has an injet printer
on it. I have another computer (new) running XP home. I
wish to share that printer. I have set up that printer
for sharing, but when I try to connect to it from the
other computer I get an "Access denied, unable to connect"
message. If I go to My Nework places and select that
computer I get a message for an account name and
password. If I enter a valid one, then I can connect and
print to that printer. I would think that if sharing is
set up properly, that I would not have to do that. Is
there something that I am missing? Does XP Pro require
something extra to connect to the printer?

Select Start/Help and Support. In the Search Box, type Share a printer and click the green arrow. Select the Share a Printer in the results for the step by step instructions.

Thanks for your response.
I had already done what you suggested. When I look
at "Printers and Faxes" there is the printer and there is
a hand under it (showing that it is shared). My problem
is that when I am on the other computer and I want to add
a printer which is that shared one. It cannot find it.
HOwever if I go to Network neighborhood, and select
computers in my work group. Then I find that computer
with the shared printer it. If I then click on that
computer it asks for an account and password. I used
administrator and its password for that computer and then
I get a window with the hard drives and printers. When I
then add a computer I can find that one, set it up and
print to it. However, later (after rebooting etc.) When I
look at that printer (which is shared by the other one) I
get the message that "Access denied, cannot connect". I
don't think that I should have to log onto the other
computer each time I want to use the computer. I keep
thinking I am missing something.

Thanks for being so response (on the 4th of July no less).
I did check and found that simple file sharing was already
checked. So as a double check I did the following:
Turned off file sharing for that printer
reboot
uncheck simple file sharing
reboot
check simple file sharing
reboot
enable file sharing for that printer
reboot
Went to other computer and tried to add a shared printer.

It acted just like before.

If you have another suggestion I would greatly appreciate
it. Happy 4th of July.

Happy Holiday to you also. :)

This is a tough one, but I still think the answer lies somewhere in the permissions on one of the machines.

Make sure that the Guest account in Control Panel/User Accounts is enabled on both machines.

If this does not fix the problem, try the following links for some expert advice on all of the protocols that need to be set properly with this configuration.

I was going to say, "is the printer actually shared? but if he walks through

Hi Cari

That's a good article you have available. There are so many things involved with setting up a printer share, it's difficult to know where to begin without being in front of the system.
