I have a desk top hooked to modem and a printer. I also have a wireless
laptop that is running off same modem. how do I set-up wireless laptop to use
the printer?
In network set-up it doesn't allow me to turn "on" printer sharing.
Wher ecould I get step by step intructions how to do this??
Thanks

You can't if what you have is just a modem - you /could/ if you had a
modem/ROUTER....

What modem manufacturer and model number is this? What cable types are used
to make the connections?

He can Network the 2 comps together by using a crossover cable, instead of

But not via the modem - so the make and model of the MODEM is completely
IRRELEVANT......

Ok, let me make sure I got this thread right before I respond. Yup looks
ok. Here is the thinking Gordon.

Some people call devices by different names such as when they call a
wireless router a modem, etc. I know it's incorrect but they don't, and
that's what we are dealing with sometimes. So when I ask for a model number
it reveals what they are really talking about.

Second some modems have an Ethernet and a USB port on them. If they tell me
they have one of these types (Motorola 5100 for example), I can THEN point
out to them that these two ports are no to be used at the same time because
modems don't route. When you install this kind of device you use one port
or the other but not both. (Actually it does switch but it takes a long
time and not practical for networking). That's also when I ask what cables
are connected to their modem and If I remember, how they have it all
connected.

So you see, every trouble shooter has a different method. Some like to
blurt it all out, others take slow deliberate steps. I though we were
dealing with a novice so I was taking it easy...small steps to solve the
problem. You have to see it all play out before you can ask if it's a
relevant question or not.

Hi guys...this is very similar to my problem. I too hope you can help. Here
is the whole situtation:

I have a Wireless N Router. Connected to that I have an XP Desktop (with a
printer), I have 2 Laptops running wireless and connect to the rourter just
fine. On the XP uit I set up Print Sharing, and went through the whole
routine of setting it up, and making a file sharing disk on the XP Desktop. I
inserted the disk in a Vista Laptop, double clicked the nssetup, and went to
town. Followed the prompts, and all is good. My wife can print from hers,a nd
her computer sees everything on the network.

I then went to the 2nd Vista Laptop, followed same procedure and got "cannot
Complete the Newtork Setup Wizard". Let me walk you thru what I did...

1) I click yes 2) Then the program extracts the file 3) I get a welcome
screen and depress next 4) Then I get "before you continue" I depress next 5)
Then I have choices..I choose #2, this computer conects through a residential
gateway 6) I have made sure all 3 computers are named the same network
MSHOME,,what went wrong? Why is this Vista a pain in the rear??

Someone help..I just want to print..

Phil

Stop right here and do the same things to the second computer...what
happens? These should be connected identically to the Wireless Access Point
(WAP) and router.

Al, I understand that the core problem is not being able turn on "printer
sharing" (not the misidentification of a router as a modem; Geeesh!).

I assume that the printer sharing that you are trying to turn on is that on
the desktop to which the printer is physically connected. In my experience,
some firewalls prevent printer sharing from being turned on in 'Network and
Sharing Center' UNTIL printer sharing has been allowed in the firewall's
settings. This behavior seems to vary by firewall vendor. Anyway, your next
step is to attempt to allow printer sharing in the firewall.

If this doesn't work, I suggest you start another thread for this issue to
get away from all the detritus attached to this one.

It won't work, because the OP doesn't have a network - all he has are two
computers attached to a MODEM so he CAN'T use printer sharing until he
either connects the two machines by a crossover cable, or buys a router.
Unfortunately the "detrius" was caused by one of the other respondents not
wanting to realise that a MODEM on its own cannot be used to create a
network...

Gordon, It would help if you would contribute to the solution and move
things forward rather then accuse and derail situations. Please consider
each sentence in a response and how it will solve a particular problem
productively.

So, U really have not had mu situation addressed here? M unit is a Wireless
Router, with my XP Desktop wired directly into one of the 4 Ethernet ports.
Last night I investigated more, and the 1 laptop does see the rpinter when I
atempt to add a port..I see the Desktop listed there..but then I add the
port, then manually add a printer..But nothing..

I hope someone has a solution.

Actually these setup problems happen all the time and they get solved one
after another, but it seems there are always slight variations to the
solutions.
Some of this I know you already did but I'd like to get a status of your
situation. Both Laptops are connected wirelessly to the router. Are you
connected to a network and can all machines see web pages ok? If your wife
can print from her laptop to the XP PC with the printer connected, then it
looks like your sharing is turned on properly. And you say you can't do the
same set up from your Vista laptop. It that right so far? If so, are you
using the "add a printer" wizard to help you add this same printer to your
computer? Please confirm that you can see the XP machine in start >
network. If you click on the XP machine there, can you also see the printer
there? If so, try the "add a printer" method once again and let us know how
far you get. If you get to a point where you have to add a port, you are
going down the wrong road. Let us know. Oh, make sure everything is on,
router, printer, XP. Your wife's machine should make no difference.

Ran across this thread while checking for possible answer to a problem.

My MODEM is an Actiontec W-701GT Modem/Wireless Gateway. This is called a
MODEM on every site I have visited. It does have "router" capability. Many of
the newer external Modem/Wireless Gateways have this capability, but they are
still called MODEMS because that is their primary function. They should
probably be called Modem/Wirelesss Gateway/Router, but that is a mouthful.

Modem (from modulator-demodulator) is a device that modulates an analog
carrier signal to encode digital information, and also demodulates such a
carrier signal to decode the transmitted information

Mine is connected by Ethernet to Compaq Desktop w/Vista HP, USB to GW/98SE,
wireless to GW/Me, Wireless to Compaq Laptop/Vista HP. All except the GW/Me
can file/print share.
My problem is the GW/Me cannot see the printer connected to the Compaq
Desktop, although it can see the shared files.
