Printer sharing

Bill G.

I have an HP printer that's connected to my desktop PC.
I've also got a laptop that I print from on a semiregular
basis and would like to allow printer sharing so I don't
have to physically unplug the USB cable from the desktop
and plug it into the laptop every time I want to print
from the laptop. I noticed that when I go through the
printer sharing wizard and select sharing without going
through the network setup I get a warning that I'm
vulnerable to attacks from the internet. I'm not really
interested in setting up a home network and just want to
share the printer. Is this warning indeed a viable threat
if I'm just sharing a printer? Thank you!

If you are setting up printer sharing and this equipment is in your
home, then you are indeed setting up a home network whether you like it
or not. And if one or both of these machines are connected to the
internet and the computer is warning that you are vulnerable to attacks
from the internet, I would believe it and look further.

Explain more about your setup.

Both computers are connected separately to a Linksys VPN
router. Thanks!

I don't have experience with a Linksys "VPN" router, but I use a Linksys
Wireless Router which essentially is a "firewall". That firewall, if
turned on and configured to block incoming packets, protects the two
machines to a very large extent.

Windowx XP setup wizards don't know about your environment and hence
have probably detected something that if you were direct connected to
Internet you might have a vulnerabilty. Hence it warns you.

Hello Bill
Look down a few posts I mapped it out for another poster
in (Networking 2 puters and 1 printer) and you will see it
I am running the same as you want to with more puters and
a router XP has a firewal and the router has a firewall
so you will be protectect from the outside guru's (I hope)
be sure to turn XP firewall on and keep a good virus scan
updated.
Hope This Helps
Jim
