We have recently started having an issue were our computers are taking a
long time to bring up the graphical printer selection dialog. This is the
dialog that has icons for each printer in what appears to be some kind of
listview control (as opposed to the one that brings up the list of printers
in a combobox). It is the one that comes up when you click File > Print in
Internet Explorer.
This issue just started recently. We have our computers set to obtain
critical hotfixes automatically from a WSUS server and I suspect the issue
may have started after the machines automatically applied some patch, but
cannot confirm that.
In an attempt to isolate whether the issue is related to any specific
printer, I have deleted each printer one-at-a-time from a machine until there
were no printers at all, but the dialog is still slow to come up even with no
printers. This should rule out any issue with trying to contact a certain
printer queue or some issue with updating drivers across the network. It
appears the issue is simply with enumerating the printers on the workstation
itself and thus occurs even if there are no printers.
Has anyone else encountered this issue or know anything about it? Thanks.
