Okidata makes very good dot matrix printers. Check their site.

How fast is fast?
How big is your budget?

This is rather Okidata's bag, they make the microline turbo series
which are nice dot matrix printers, still sold in 9 or 24 pin IIRC.
Epson still makes a line of dot matrix printers, at least for a4 the
Oki microline series seems to be prefered as far as speed goes.

Tally Genicom makes a line of line printers which meet your
qualification of "fast", and "heavy duty" but I have less hands on
experence with these as you buy one, and keep it a decade or two, and
I've not met one smaller than a2... and are about 4x to 10x the price
of base oki/epson models.
