No laserjet interested.

For just printing just black and white, what would be a decent one?

For pinting, copying, and scanning, what would be a decent one?

For pinting, copying, scanning, fax what would be a decent one?

For pinting, copying, scanning, fax (with LEGAL sized paper option)
what would be a decent one?

I'd buy HP. Go to the HP web page and find one with the specs you want.
You don't have to spend a lot of money for a pretty good unit. The HP 5610
multifunction is about $129. Eliminate the fax and you get the other
features for about $80. I don't think you can even buy a B & W only inkjet
any more and lasers are not that much more costly. .

Thanks. I like HP and bought it for myself. This is for my sister who
acts so needy to the extent that she won't make a decision because she
does't want to absorb the info on specs.

I did look at soem HP and Lexmark and did see what you said. So I sent
her the info via email.

I'd take a Canon as their price per page printed is lower. And the real
costs of a printer are the costs for printing, not for the hardware.

Amanda:
I would definately stay clear of the Lexmark line, as the print
quality is marginal and the real cost of ownership printing is ver y
expensive. The cartridges are very spendy.

I've had good luck with HP printers & Canons. Currently I have a HP
Photosmart 3310 AIO (all in one) It has individual ink carts and so
you can replace them as they run out, the cost is somewhere in the
$8.00 per color range.

As it was mentioned, stay away from Lexmark/Dell. Their machines
usually aren't very good and the cost to operate them is very high.

If you don't want a laser printer but are interested in printing
documents, you should probably get an HP. They are usually the most
reliable for text printing.

For an all-in-one, it depends on how much you want to spend. If you
want to get a really good one, you could try the Canon MP830, but
that's usually around $250. A good one that is cheaper is the HP
OfficeJet 5610, which is $150 but has the same features as the Canon.
Both print, copy, scan and fax and both will accept legal sized paper.

When you say individual, you mean black and tricolor cartridges, right?

I bought the HP OfficeJet 5610 for her yesterday. Got it for $134.99
at fry's (fry's was out of supply but Best Buy matched it for me) .
PriceGrabber.com was selling it for 111.??. Don't what shipping fee it.

Would you by any chance know which wireless printserver - I assume
that reliable but common brand would be cheaper than HP brand - would
be compatible with it? I called HP and the one they give me is $199.00
for HP DirectJet EW2400 802.11g.

I'd rather she spend the money on printer and get a later model than
on printer server if she has to spend that much on a printerserver.

Thanks for the info.

The 3310 is one of the few HPs that has six individual ink cartridges.
It's more of a photo printer though, and the cartridges aren't really
that big, but it recirculates the ink so you get more prints per
cartridge than some other brands.

The 5610 is the first of the business copier series, so it's a little
more rugged than the lower end all in ones. However, the color tank it
takes is very small, even more expensive to run than a Lexmark. If
she's not planning on doing much color printing, then you should be
fine with this, just make sure you get #56 Black cartridges and not
the 21 or 28 since they are smaller and cost more per print. You might
even want to go into the printer settings and make it use all black
ink, as this will save color, and you can always change it back when
you want to use it.

Any print server will tend not to work with all-in-one machines, even
the ones that come direct from the same company (You should always
check and see if your model is supported). That being said, while I
have been unable to get a Lexmark all-in-one working with a Linksys or
Netgear print server, I have managed to get several HP all-in-ones
working with Linksys wireless print servers. The fax and scan
functions will not be accessible this way, though.

Well, that's the case with HP 6310 which I was about to buy returning
5610 due to printserver issue but someone in alt.internet.wireless gave
me the info that D-Link DPR 1260 would work.
