Use the driver that ships with XP for the printer. All the other software
on the CD that came with the printer is designed for Windows 95 or 98. Some
of the programs might run on XP but none of the print drivers will work and
the software that displays the current printing status of jobs (the language
monitor) will not work at all.
The printer should Plug and Play on XP as long as the LPT port is configured
properly in the BIOS (don't remember if this is ECP or EPP check HP.com and
see if they state what they need for LPT configuration). The device is host
based so most of the brains of the device reside in the software on the
computer. HP did design a plugin for this model to align or clean the print
cartridges that is part of the driver.
