Can anyone help with a problem i have with my printer?I have a desktop with XP PRO and a EPSON C64 printer.I also have a laptop with Vista home premium via a router to allow connection to the internet. I was able to print from the laptop provided the desktop was on, until today that is.I can access the internet from the laptop so the wireless connection is ok.I tried uninstalling the printer from the desktop then reinstalling and still nothing.I have tried searching for a printer from the laptop but it says nothing found. It originally searched and found the printer without any trouble .Can anyone help me solve this?

You could uninstall the printer from the desktop and then re-install it, to make sure all associations are re-created. Then open up your firewall software and make sure file/printer sharing is enabled.

Now, follow these instructions to set up the printer for sharing:

  1. Open Network and Sharing Center by clicking the Start button

, clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, and then clicking Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Click the arrow button

next to Printer sharing to expand the section, click Turn on printer sharing, and then click Apply. Your printer is now shared on the network.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  3. If you are using a computer connected to a workgroup, click the arrow button

next to Password protected sharing to expand this section, and then check to see if password-protected sharing is turned on or off. If it is turned on, only people with a user account and password for this computer will be able to access your printer. Turn this off if you want anyone on the network to be able to access the printer you are sharing. To change this setting, select the option you prefer, and then click Apply.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Once you've done all that, it should show up on the XP laptop when you try to add a network printer. If not, we can delve a little deeper and try to troubleshoot it :)

Thanks for the reply Ian.
I have been through the uninstal/reinstall again.
I have also gone through what you have said.
The Password protect sharing was on, so i have switched that to off.
Printer sharing was off, i have turned it on, then clicked apply.I am then prompted by the user account control for permission to continue, clicked continue, and am then taken back to the network and sharing page and the printer sharing is still off. I have tried this several times and get the same result.I am the only user of the laptop and desktop and no passwords have been set on either. If a prompt to continue comes up usually clicking on the continue button works without any problem.

Have you tried asking the laptop to find a new printer in network sharing. Also is the cable that connects the laptop to the printer you're using a good cable. Can you try another cable?
Is the printer connected to the laptop or the router. If it's connected to the router then try it direct to the laptop.
Could it be a router problem.
Have you had any ms updates that may have upset something on you.
I had router issues a couple of weeks ago.
These little issues can be very frustrating. Hope i was of some help. I'm sure someone here will sortyou out. hang in there.

Thanks for the reply Captain zed.I have tried searching for a printer but no luck. The printer is connected to my desktop and prints ok from there.I cannot get printer sharing to switch on in Vista, on my laptop for some reason.I think it may have something to do with MS updates because nothing has changed apart from downloads.

Sorry to hear you didn't get a fix......i'm actually having the same issue cos after reading your post i decided to drag my printer(lexmark) out of the press and my laptop cannot find the printer. I'm running vista.
I'll try again.
First go to control panel then network sharing and for this exercise i'm turning printer sharing "on".
Turn password sharing off just for now.
My girlfriend has just told me that the printer came with a software disc....D'oh

Anyway carrying on...next go back to control panel and this time go to Printers and add a printer.

This gives you the option of adding either a usb connected printer or a wireless blue toof jobbie.
I'm gonna try a usb cable connection for now and i'll get back to you in a bit.
Hope this is helping.;)

Also check in the admin tools to see if anything in there is turned off and stopping you from getting sorted.
My print spooler was turned off so i turned it back on. I'm not sure if it will make a difference but its worth trying.
Maybe some of the more experienced members might be able to help.
