I recently purchased a new laptop (Sony VAIO). I have had, for a few years
now, an HP Laserjet 5P printer which works perfectly well. I have now
installed this to work with the new laptop - this required a USB-Parallel
adaptor and I am now running through a hub as I do not have enough USB ports
on the laptop.

Everything works fine with one small exception - every time I print I always
end-up with one extra sheet with the letters 's1M' in the top left corner,
but nothing else. This is not visible on Print Preview but always prints.

How do I get rid of this?

That sounds a lot like a flag page. Carefully check very one of the
settings in the Properties dialog for your printer.

Another possibility -- harder to diagnose -- is that somehow the
converter, or the printer, is missing the first couple of characters
of a print job, and is treating as data the rest of the "clear" or
"start job" command sent by the printer driver. In this case you
might be able to resolve the problem by swapping plugs -- take some
device now plugged directly into the computer and plug it into the
hub, then plug the converter directly into the computer. (This
assumes your computer has more than one USB port, but since it's a
late model I hope that's a fair assumption.)

Have you tried printing without using the Hub? Use the single USB port
for the printer and print a small document to see if it eliminates the extra
page for it looks like it is getting data from there to print.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Well, what was the resolution to the problem?

This is due to using a parallel port to USB adapter for printing.

You can fix this by turning off bidirectional support:

- Right click your printer, select properties
- go to the ports tab, uncheck Enable bidirectional support.

Your printer has to be turned on before printing.

That fixed the extra page printing s1M problem for me.
