Printer problem is driving me nuts

Hi all,

I have a legacy app that won't work unless a generic text-only printer
is installed as the default printer, even though it's only a mythical
entity and never actually used. After running this app I want to make
my USB ink jet the default for real printing jobs. Unfortunately the
Printer and Faxes folder contains only one printer (the generic text-
only thingy), so there's no context-menu item that allows a default
printer to be selected.

Can someone be my hero and suggest a solution? (Getting rid of the
legacy app isn't an option because it seems to be my boss's favorite
program because it's the only one he understands.)

Thanks!

I can think of a simple kludge fix: Just add another printer (perhaps one
close in type to what you already have, or whatever), so that you will be
able to select a default printer, from that point onwards.

If your printer was installed, it should be in

Settings...Printers

If it's is not there you will need to (re)install it

Problem is, the real deal is a USB device and therefore doesn't show
up in the Printer and Fax folder.

See my reply to Philo.

It does not matter if the printer is LPT or USB it should still show up in
"Printers"

I reinstalled and the USB printer does show in the Printer and Fax
folder. Maybe the original installation got munged. Thanks to all who
answered.
