Printer Preference Settings

I am trying to print across a LAN using an application
(ArcView 3.2) that runs via the Task Scheduler at 4:00
a.m. every day. I can select the networked printer as the
default printer but cannot permanently set my print
preferences of "landscape" and "print 5 copies." Whenever
the printer properties dialog box is closed the settings
revert to "portrait" and "print 1 copy." Does anyone know
how to make these settings permanent?

I tried your suggestion but the printer still would not
accept the settings
(I get a dialog box that says the settings cannot be
accepted). A little
more information might assist you. The printer is
installed as the default
printer on another machine that requires settings for
portrait and print 1
copy. I added another printer (using the same driver as
the default) and now
have two icons for the same printer. It is the second
printer icon that I am
trying to set as landscape and 5 copies. Any suggestions?

Change the settings on the server Printer Properties / Advanced Tab /
Printing defaults... These are the printer settings . Print Preferences
are per user settings.

Do you have administrative rights on the machine where the printer is
physically connected?

What type of printer do you have?

What is the exact wording in the popup error?

What operating system is on machine1 (where the printer is attached) and
machine2 (the one with the connection to machine1)

Mr. Morris,

I do not have administrative privileges and have just
been told that the lady who is the user of the machine
does not either. Our IT guy said he would see if she can
be raised to a level that will allow her to make changes
on her machine. I have a question about this, though. I
used her Windows login and added the printer - would I
have been able to add the printer if she didn't have
administrative privileges?

The printer in question is a Hewlett-Packard HP PSC
2175v. Another bit of information that may help - I
couldn't use the Add a Printer function under Printer
Tasks to add this machine. The software that was
initially used to install the printer also would not
allow me to add the printer a "second" time. I had to use
the Add a Printer function and tell it that I was adding
a similar printer, then I told it to use the drivers for
that were installed for this machine.

When I try to change the Printer Defaults a box pops up
that says "Printer settings could not be saved. Operation
could not be completed" and there is an OK button. After
pressing the OK button several times a new box appears
that says "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created." There is also an OK
button for this box.

The machine with the shared printer is using Windows
2000. My machine is using XP.

Only Admins can add a local printer (and Power Users when you change some
settings), any user can make a network connection as long as the server has
a driver to download to the client.

So the explorer is crashing when saving the settings so the setting are
never properly updated. Most likely this is caused by the HP driverUI when
loaded in explorer process. I'll get the driver from HP and confirm what
kind of access they need when loading their UI module.

Thank you very much for the additional info.

I was unable to reproduce the explorer crash but the Print Defaults setting
clearly is not saved properly. This is in the HP driver and an issue has
been raise to HP on this.
