Printer Ports????

I just got a new computer with XP. My old one had W2K.
On my new one when I select a Printer Port (LP1) the checking square grays
out. Sometimes the printer works and sometimes not. I there an explanation
for this? Thank you.

consider getting a printer connected via USB.....

Did you install the printer? IE. Power off, connect the printer so it can be
detected. After it is installed, reboot.
