Printer Ports Disappear

Scott

I have a Windows 2000 Server (SP4) that is are main print
server. We currently have 26 printers shared off this
server, all using the Microsft TCP/IP Port. After I added
my last printer, all the ports disappeared. By this, I
mean that when you click on PROPERTIES on a printer and go
to the PORTS tab, there is nothing there. Likewise, if
you try to add a new printer, no ports appear (even the
LPT ports). I know they are there because users can still
print to the existing printers. Even when I try to add a
new port, it will not show up in the list.

Any suggestions?

I think that if you reverse the installation of service
pack 4 by rolling back you might be able to see your
printer ports. You will only achive this if you selected
to save or archive before installing service pack 4.

Hope this help.

This problem actually occurred under SP3 as well. I
installed SP4 in hopes that it would correct the problem.

Any other ideas?

Hi

It might be possible that print services are not running
stable. Check the following services

"Print Spooler"
"TCP/IP Print Server"

Normally they are set to start-up type "Automatic"...

Markus

You only need the "TCP/IP Print Services" if you want your print server to
be able to RECEIVE print via the lpr/lpd protocol (e.g. from a UNIX
computer). It is not needed for printing via Microsoft Network Printing -
normal print shares.

The Standard TCP/IP Port is all you need to be able to send print over
TCP/IP to print LAN adapters.
