Printer pausing, missing text after XP upgrade

Can anyone tell me what might be wrong?

I upgraded my home computer to XP about 6 months ago. Ever since then, my
Lexmark Z12 printer has been giving me problems. The troubleshooter was
unhelpful. The printer sometimes freezes entirely. Sometimes it just
pauses, skips some text, then continues. Problem is less severe (but still
there) in draft quality. I have over 500 MB of memory on the machine. Have
reinstalled LPT1 port, reinstalled drivers, gotten new drivers from Lexmark,
etc. I brought the printer to work and plugged it into my machine there and
it worked perfectly. ARGH!

No dice. It didn't work. I followed your procedure with two versions of the
driver listed on the website. It still freezes.

Sometimes the printer pauses then restarts, skipping text. Other times it
freezes entirely and has to be rebooted. Problem seems less severe in Draft.
Also, problem seems worse if I give it more than one page at a time.

The best explanation I can come up with is that XP may be sending the
printer more information than its memory can handle.

Just to make matters worse, the Lexmark Z12 does not seem to be on the
Microsoft Windows XP compatibility list and the drivers I got from Lexmark
were unsigned (though the printer is reconginzed and will install plug and
play).

Finally, the printer worked fine on my work computer, which is also runnning
XP. (But was never upgraded to XP from something else)

Now, I may have fixed the problem...it just zinged off a few pages without
pausing or messing anything up. I accomplished this amazing feat by plugging
the printer in via USB cable instead of the parallel port connector. XP
installed the stock drivers and presto.
