printer not working

I was trying to make my computer run faster and I found an article on line
that said to remove autostart programs that you do not need to autostart
every time. I removed things I think I shouldn't have because now my printer
doesn't work and I don't know what i removed that would effect the printer,
Do you know what I might have done??? I have tried uninstalling and then
reinstalling my printer with a disc but it says the printer is not connected
correctly, I have tried a new cable, I tried system restore but it will only
go back to April which was after I did this.........Please help

See if you have stoped the Printer Spooler service. To check this,
right-click on My Computer - click Manage - expand to Services and
Application - then Service - here double-click on Printer Spooler service -
under Startup Type - set it to Automatic (if it is not) and then click Start.

You have not specified the Cable type you are using. Is it USB or Parraller
cable?

See if this information helps you and let us know.

I did everything stated below but service status was started and start up
type was already set to automatic,,I have a USB cable and have tried a new
cable and different ports that I know work because I use them for my ipod
currently,,,is there anything else I could have deleted to make the printer
stop working??? I also deleted programs from the add/remove programs if they
hadn't been used in a while and I didn't recognize them. Here are the
instructions I followed to remove autostart programs
Windows XP comes with the System Configurationtool (Msconfig.exe), an
excellent way to manage the startup process. To start it:

1.
Click Start, click Run, type Msconfig, and then press Enter.

2.
On the Startup tab, you'll see a list of all the programs and processes
that are set to run when Windows XP loads.

3.
Speed up your overall start time by clearing the check box next to any item
you think you don't need.

4.
Click Apply, and then restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

THANK-YOU IN ADVANCE

Before you call someone to fix this problem, try the following see if it
helps you.

1. Check the items back that you have uncheck from MSCONFIG.
2. Right-Click on My Computer - choose Properties - click Hardware tab -
click Device Manager. See, if there is an "Universal Serial Bus Controller"
entry in the end of the list. If it is there, then see if any yellow
exlamation sign there.

Now, you have to diagnose something. If the USB item is there in Device
Manager and there is an exlamation sign then you need your Motherboard CD to
reinstall the USB drivers. This could be the one reason, your PC is not
detecting the Printer.

Furthermore, if there is not item called "Universal Serial Bus Controller"
in Device Manager then possibilities are they have disabled through BIOS. If
this is so, then restart your PC and then press DEL (or the key required to
enter in BIOS setup as per your BIOS). Here search for an entry something
like ONBOARD USB. If it is disable then Enable it.

Again notifying you that USB entry must exist in Device Manager and working
properly to have your PC detect the printer.

Before you reinstall your printer, unplug the USB cable and only insert when
asked by the installation. Also try to use your old printer cable first.

Let us know, if this information helps you.

I rechecked everything on msconfig and restarted my computer; there were no
explanation points on the USB controllers, I clicked on each one which stated
they were working properly, I hate to buy a new printer, what if it is not
the printer?? my only alternative is to pay Dell $100 to try and help me, any
suggestions???

Does the printer show in Start, Printers and Faxes? If it does right
click the Printer, select properties and go to Ports. If the printer is
connecting via USB then make sure the port is set to USB_001 (or
similar) and not to LPT1. If you reinstalled the software from the CD
it may have reset the port to LPT1.
