I have a Brother MFC3100C printer attached to W2k. It seems like I am
constantly having to run setup to re-define the darn thing, especially after
a period of extended use. Everytime I go to use it I hold my breath to see
if it will work. Sometimes I can unplug/replug and it works again.
Sometimes not. It is connected via a USB cable.

Is there something in the OS that I can tweak, or is this a printer problem
entirely? I am looking for an excuse to dump it for something more
reliable.

Wrong group. Please repost in comp.periphs.printers.

Yeah. A printer isn't hardware!

And we've never had a printer post in this group before. We don't
want to start a precedent.

ROTFLMAO !!!

I don't mind posting in another group, but 80% of the stuff in that other
group would make a sailor blush.

Do you have all the service packs installed for w2k? Are the printer
drivers for w2k? See if there's any newer drivers.

Connected directly to the computer?...no hub, right?

Did it always act like this?

Yes, I stay current with patches.

Correct. Via a USB cable directly.
Did it always act like this?

Yes, it's always been problematic. Could this happen during a power outage,
and the printer loses it's setup?

Out of curiosity, do you know of any multi-function printers that are
networkable, such that I could connect them to a router? I have a home
network with 3 clients, and growing.

There was nothing wrong with your post.

No.

Do you have a print server on the router? If not, you would normally
just print from the machine where the printer is connected.
I have a home
network with 3 clients, and growing.

NOW you tell us about the network!! lol

Are you using this as a network printer? If so, tell us your
configuration...and which node (or all?) is having the problem.

I don't think the network enters into it. It is directly connected to one
PC, and that's the only PC that prints to it. THis used to happen before I
installed a network, too.
