Printer leaves smudges

Hi all
Have noticed smudging (black ink ony) when printing on ALL envelopes with
(Canon pixma ip4000), but it does't happen when printing on sheet paper. Have
followed the maintenance procedure but to no avail. This is not a big
problem but am curious to know why it happens when printing on envelopes
ONLY. Thanks for any helpful response.

Envelopes are in fact two sheets of paper. The upper sheet is drawn faster
into the printer then the lower sheet. So the upper sheet is pushed against
the printhead.
Solution: maybe you should use a better quality of envelopes or try to clean
the paper-transport.

Are you using the lower cassette tray? If so, try the upper tray, the feed path
is much straighter and the resulting bending of the envelope will not be as
tough on the paper path.

This is usually because--
The envelope is thicker than the normal paper you print with--There may be a
printer setting that moves the head a bit farther away from the envelope.
Flattening the envelope may help with the problem. (Weight on envelope until
just before printing.)
The printer head may need cleaning to remove excess ink. This is usually
complicated by the need to get to the head's printing surface. You may need
to unplug the printer when the head is not at rest to gain access to the
head. Finally most printer models have a sponge that is intended to remove
excess ink from the printing surface. It may be in need of some cleaning.
 
Yes, thicker paper does have an impact on the ability of a printer to feed
correctly but envelopes have an added complication. They have a minimum of two
pieces of paper to handle (three if there is a folded down flap), when the
envelope is fed round a roller the "outside" sheet of the envelope is
travelling faster than the inside sheet. This can cause wrinkling of the
envelope and sometimes jams. The straighter the path the less impact this will
have.

I have a Cannon IP3000 and had the same problem. I found that instead of
clicking Print on the dialog box I eliminated the smudges by clicking Add to
Document than Print. This opens the printer dialog box and allows you to
click preferences--envelope, etc. The envelopes than print cleanly. Tommac
