Printer Installation

I'm trying to install an Epson Stylus R320 printer on a new Dell E310
computer running Windows Professional. I get through the software
installation and then it looks for the printer and can't find it. It appears
that it is trying to install it on LPT1. My computer (and the computer this
printer has been running on for a long time) has a USB connection - not LPT1
- and the printer only has a USB connnection.

After it searches to find the printer I get an error message that it can't
find it - even though there is a pop-up window when I plug in the USB cable
that tells me it has found new hardware.

I just spent an hour on the phone with Dell turning things on and off,
installing, uninstalling and reinstalling software and got nowhere.

Anyone insight into solving this problem would be greatly appreciated!

Is this a USB port on the motherboard itself... and if so, on the front or
the back of the PC?

Hi -

Thanks for getting back to me. I've tried the USB ports on both the front
and back of the computer and cannot get the printer to install to any of them
-- and they all work for all of the other accessories I have attach, so the
problem isn't in the USB ports - it's either in the computer or the
installation program that only lists LPT and COM ports -- no USB ports to
install the printer to.

When you say ALL the other accessories, how many are you attaching? Many?
It is possible it's a Power Supply Unit insufficiency. All the USB ports on
the motherboard have to be powered from the PSU..... and if it's not
adequate, things start to go a little askew.

If you have a powered USB hub, that might work....

Another suggestion would be to ensure you've uninstalled everything as far
as the printer is concerned, and then look for updated drivers at the Epson
website. It might be something on the CD that is not quite right.

Oh and the very simplest one... try another USB cable.

I REALLY DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT COMPUTER IAM TRYING TO SEND AN ATTACHMENT TO MY
TEACHER AND I DONT KNOW HOW TO DO IT ,ITS A PROJECT SHE DID NOT RECEIVE TO
GRADE I NEED HELP MARY

Thanks Carl,

No, I'm not running a bunch of things at one time - all I'm saying is that
I've had at least one other accessory/flash drive/i-pod, portable hard drive,
etc. connnected to each of the six USB ports - but not all at the same time -
and all the ports have worked fine. This is a brand new computer - only had
it a week and am trying to get the printer installed.

Yes, I got the drivers from the Epson Web site so I believe they are current
and up to date.

Have tried another USB cable also but this printer was removed from one
computer where it was working fine with the USB cable that was attached to it
and plugged into the new computer.

I'm waiting for an e-mail from the Dell support folks in New Dehli but am
not holding my breath!

Hi Mary,

You've posted a reply to the message I had posted earlier, but I'll try to
help you.

Depending on the e-mail program you are using, there is usually an icon that
says something like 'attach file' or 'attachment'. When you click on that it
wants to know where the file is located and will usually browse through the
directory you select to find it - sometimes 'my documents' - unless you save
it somewhere else. I've found it's easier to locate documents by saving them
to my desktop when I know I'm going to have to attach them to an e-mail.

Hope this helps.
