printer installation problems

I'm trying to install an hp1100 series scanner/printer, and my PC won't read the disc.. I tried to install manually, PC will show HP1100 as my printer, but won't print. I've changed where the USB cord connects, but nothing. Took disc to friends, to see if I had a bad disc, but it worked. What to do?
 
There is a communication update on the HP site, perhaps this would help.
