I'm running Win98SE on a 350MHz machine with 192 M RAM. Using the
Resource Meter with Win98SE, my computer had 82% free resources.
I installed a HP 7760 printer which is a USB connect and must be
connected to the computer and not to a USB hub. All went well and I
printed some stuff. I looked and the free resources was down at 57%.
I rebooted and the resources went to 81% free. I left the machine
for about 25 minutes, and came back. The screen saver was running in
a jerky manner. I looked at the resource icon in the sys tray and it
was grey and when I tried to click on it, I got a message that said I
was out of resources and to quit some programs. Nothing would work.
The machine had hung up. The start menu was grey with no items
showing. I rebooted with the restart and the free resources went up
to 82% free again. I sat and watched the resource meter
and I could watch it go down and pretty soon it was down to 40% free
resources. I had turned off the printer and disabled NAV.
Suddenly a grey box labeled HP 7760 with nothing in it came on the
screen. I could not get rid of it so I did a control alt delete and
ended the task and the resources went back up to 82% free. If I just sit
and watch the resource meter, I can watch it go down. I rebooted and
then
just let it sit and after 45 minutes, the free resources were down to
zero. Zero!! I had to restart and the free resources went to 81%.
When I go to startup in MSCONFIG, there are a lot of HP things starting.
I don't know what in startup I can uncheck. What's confusing is that
whatever is happening is happening over a short period of time and using
up resources.
Before the printer install, the computer worked without giving any
problems. It was only after I installed the HP printer that I had
problems.
I ran AdAware and found only one cookie which I deleted. That had no
effect on the resources. I ran NAV and had no viruses. Before I started
the printer installation, I ran scandisk and defrag.
Got any bright ideas?
