Hi, I am not very experienced with Terminal Services printing and I have
just been given a new client who is using it and having local printing
issues when logged into terminal services.

Can someone point me in the direction of a good resource for the basics of
printing and local printing in terminal services on Windows 2000.

I am not sure of the setup they are using and would really like to be able
to understand how it should work so I can start them over agian if
neccassary.

Thanks

JD,

What sort of trouble are they having in printing locally? What type and model of printer are you trying to use? Most HPs function well, but in my experience, some brands such as Canon and Lexmark can have issues. Also, terminal services has some bugs when it comes to printers that are connected via a USB cable. It's often best to connect with a paralel instead.

First thing is to make sure that when they are logged on to the terminal server, that they can see the printer in question. If the printer is set as their default locally, then it should also appear as their default on the terminal.

If that is true, then the next step is to make certain that the drivers you have installed on the terminal server is the same as the one that is installed on the local computer. When I mean the same, I also mean that the driver file must have the exact same filename in both places.

Hope this helps.

The printer just stopped printing for this one user. Other users are working
fine. When I log into ts as her I see a printer with the exact same name as
her local (parallel) printer but it won't print.

When I check the other users and look at their printers on the terminal
server the port they are printing to says "lan manager port" pointing to
\\computername\printername.

The user who can not print has (on the server) a standard tcp/ip port
pointing to \\computername\printername ?????

So either I don't understand how this is suppose to work or the original
setup was very strange.

Thanks for the help
