I have a PC that still runs win95 (old PC). I need to buy a printer
for that PC but cannot find one that is compatible with win95. I
have seen an HP printer that requires win98SE in Staples but I dont
know if it will work with win95. My PC has a parallel port only, no
USB. Can anyone suggest what printer to buy? Thank you.

I would not go back to Win95 for all the tea in china. If you want to
be a masochist, I'd suggest going to ebay for an older model
printer---save your $ for an eventual PC and/or OS upgrade

Choose printer with known language - in case of laser printer some that
talks PCL or postscript.
By the way if you have pci bus you can by card with USB port.

Unfortunately Win 95 does not support USB.

But poorly though. If you want USB, get 98 as well.

A secondhand one of similar age.

Unfortunately Win 95 does not support USB.

But some adaptors do. Do a search for:

Glory Mark USB-102

It's only 1.1 but there may be 2.0 versions out.

Or get a printer that has a parallel port. The i860 does and has drivers
for W95. So does the i560.

But everybody says it does not work and advise turning USB off.

Would this be USB 1?

i just installed a brand new Minolta 1250W laser printer on a laptop
running windows95 (parallel port) works very well

Yes, and only on built on Mobo USB interfaces. Add-on USB cards don't
work in 95B.

95 wasn't that bad. Know it's limits. Stay in bounds. No problems.

Maybe his machine does everything he needs it to do. All he needs is a $80
printer. Not $500 worth of computer plus - guess what? - a printer.

Depends on whether you NEED color. If B/W is OK, a plethora of used
parallel lasers are in the marketplace. An example is a 300DPI Panasonic
KX-P4410. Could probably be has for $30 give or take. Buck up a little bit
and you could go into an office quality printer like an HP LJ4 or Lexmark
Optra S. For less money than you think. Second Wind PCs has a bunch of off
lease gear that may suit your needs. Check them out.

If you need color, the Epson 1280 is a choice, although it is an expensive
one. Epsons in general have always been interface friendly, and I'm sure
there are other models in their line that would fit your needs.

You haven't looked very hard as there are several that have Windows 95
support.

Printers that only have a USB port are not compatible with the original
Win95 (but even that can be overcome) because USB wasn't part of the
Windows platform at that time.

Look at the Canon i560 or i860. They both have parallel ports and their
website mentions they work with Win95. They have excellent output.

My older i850 is also Win95 compatible. However, some of the software
packages are designed for Win98 and above, which isn't really a problem
unless you specifically need the included programs (most of my printing
is from non-Canon programs).

If an HP printer is what you're after, try contacting HP directly and
see if it's the software that is not Win95 compatible. The printer
itself may work fine with Win95 and a parallel port. The same goes for
various Epson and Lexmark printers.

it. I am thinking to buy Canon i560. thank you for help.

It is a high speed version of the paralell port. It uses the same
connectors/pinning, but with a performance spec. I wouldn't worry
about it on an older PC, but get a 1284 spec cable anyway (they all
should be by now anyway.) I'd also be sure your parallel port can
handle advanced modes (such as ECP and EPP), modern printers may NEED
that capability.
