I have a special application that needs a printer or numbering machine that
can print on the edge of a document, the top or the side depending on where
space is available. All I need to print on the edge is a seven digit number
and I need the ability to get that number from a computer. I need a printer
where I can just insert the edge of the paper and not the whole thing. Like
some postage machines I have seen. Does anyone know where I might find such
a printer or stamping device?

some laser printers print right to the edge. Its usually the
software that provides a printless area around the edge. Seems to me
Canon makes one.

The key is that I need a printer where I can just insert the edge of the
document and not the whole thing.

Why?

If its gonna print only on the edge, its ALREADY into the rollers!

Printers are not built to do what you want to do. The only suggestion
I can make...if you REALLY need to do what you say...is write a
printing routine...with a 'pause' after printing the number. Then
turn off the computer...pull out the paper...and go on to the next
one.

Or get a number stamp...that will increment each time you use it. You
really don't need a computer for what you want to do.

I am trying to replace our existing process where we already use a
sequential number stamping machine. Very fast, Very simple. Now we want to
have many of these machines numbering documents but they each must have
unique numbers and they have to be in order. They all need to be getting
the number from the same source (i.e. It is not acceptable to have one
machine incrementing in the one millions and the next in the two millions
etc.). So Ideally what I need is a computer controlled random number
stamping machine. I have scoured the internet for days and have yet to find
such a device.

If you'd still like some help on this, give us some SPECIFIC
details...original documents?...all the same size?...all the same
print?...printed by you?...or brought in by customers?...etc.

And why don't you want the document to go entirely thru the printer?

Maybe we can help you come up with a solution.

Okay, these are legal documents of varying sizes and thickness, some with
imprints and others were or are part of multi-page carbon packs. I need to
print three things,
1. date and time (each page)
2. book and page (each page)
3. docket number (once a document, a document can be from one to several
hundred pages.)

right now these are done by three different machines and it is surprisingly
fast. This is part of a legal recording process so all these have to be
done in order and at the actual time of recording while the person is
standing there. And people often come in with hundreds of pages at a time.
The font does not matter. right now there is one of each machine so only
one person can do this at a time. We cannot stamp a docket number or book
and page in any order other than what order they were in when the customers
walked in the door and got in line.

For example if we were to have two counter persons and a line of people
waiting. The first customer goes to over to employee A and gets docket
number 1000000 stamped on their documents and then the second person in line
goes to employee B and gets 1000001. Then the third person in line goes to
employee A and gets 1000002. etc...

So I need and computer controlled stamping machine or a super fast printer.
Keep in mind that the antiquated stamping machines can stamp about 50 pages
a minute. Oh yeah and the text on the documents is very irregular so you
can't be assured of space to print on the top of the printer or down the
side. you may have to stamp on any of the four edges. That is why I have
been asking for a printer that can just go down the edge and not take the
whole thing. I also don't want to mash the seals that some douments come in
with.

The details sure paints a better picture, Kirt.

I really don't think you'll find any better system than what you now
have. At any rate, I don't think you want a printer. A printer
couldn't do what you want...especially with the location of the stamp.
And there's always a delay when sending a print order to the spooler
or printer.

If you need to kick up efficiency for some reason, I think its gonna
hafta be in more personnel and/or more equipment...maybe even in
better flow.

But it really looks like you've got the best equipment for the job
right now. I'm guessing that these machines are electric.

Good luck.
