Printer Epson DX4450 problem

Is there a way of preventing Epson DX4450 rejecting cartridges when they are still useable (I can hear the ink sloshing about inside them). Also, when it does have any empty cartridge, one cannot print at all as the STOP message has come up in the screen message. Can this be circumvented? I only got 200 pages out of the last cartridge of black.

Are the cartridges genuine Epson or are they compatibles or refills?
