This happened to me once before but I can not remember how
I fixed it. I changed dll or something to enable the
printers. This time it happened when uninstalling Norton
internet Security that was giving problems. All my
printers disappeared from the Printers and Faxes list. PNP
will not recognize either the Brother MFC 8600 or HP 7150.
The "add printer" option returns the message "Operation
could not be completed". The last time this happened I
found that the entire printer list was still in memory and
one simple change restored the list. I thought it was
under compute/ properties/ manage but I can not find it.
Please help.

No, your Printer Spooler has just stopped.

From the command prompt, type:

net start spooler

and they will magically reappear!

Thanks for responding. You are right the print spooler
service is stopped.

Entering the command you suggested returned the
message "system error 1068 has occurred. The dependence
service or group failed to start."

Server properties could not be viewed under
settings/printers and faxes/file/server properties either.

Also the printers key does not appear in the registry
editor
under "Hkey_local_machine/system/currentControlSet/control/
print/???"

Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks for your help.

right-click on my computer, click manage. expand services and
applications, click services. go down to "print spooler" and look at its
properties. set startup type to automatic, hit apply. then click start.

All,

I found the problem.

LexBce Server, under msconfig/services was turned off.

Thanks,

John
