Printer Driver

Some time ago I posted a message regarding problems I have with Word2002,
which are apparently due to Word looking for a printer when it opens, and
the fact that the printer that I use (Hp 6122) not being suitable for a home
network. It works most of the time, but so often I get continuous problems
with Word closing down and asking me if I want to send a report to MS.

It occurred to me that a laptop when on the move is not attached to any
newtwork or printer. So how come you can use Word then?

I assume that I need to configure a second (non existent ) printer .

If that is the case, then I should be able to switch to that configuration
when I am writing with Word, and only worry about the printer driver, when
it comes to printing.

If I can do that 90% of my problems would be solved.

Can anybody throw some light on what and how I should proceed?

Thank you

qim

Word does not ever have to have access to a physical printer except to
print. What it does require is access to a printer driver, installed locally
(even if it's a network printer). If your 6122 driver is installed locally,
you should have no problem with Word. If you must print to a different
printer, then switch to that driver before printing, but you may see some
reformatting, so it would be better to have that driver (also installed
locally) selected when setting up the document.

You don't need a printer attached to the PC, only the driver for one.

Hello Suzanne

You're going to think I'm pretty dim..and won't be far off..

Let me see if I can understand:

At the moment when I look in Control Panel/Printers all I have is one icon
which is the shared printer attached to the remote. The driver, I assume,
is the driver for the HP 6122, which as I said is not meant to do
networking.

So, what I have to do now, is to physically attach the printer to this
computer, install it, which is automatic in an XP and then use that new icon
as default, until I need to print, when I have to change default printers.

Is that it?

Sorry...

Also in Control panel >Printers is the 'Add Printer' icon. You don't need
the printer present of you have the driver as you can add it manually. There
does not appear to be a standard driver for your printer, so presumably you
have this on disc.

Can I just ask you one more silly question?

When I start "Adding the printer" it asks me to chose a door. Which one
shall I pick up?

Thanks

qim

Door? Do you mean Port? Maybe it's a language thing. You want LPT1: which is
the PC's parallel port.

I have the 6122 myself, and actually it can be either parallel or USB. I've
got it connected to a USB port because my laser printer is parallel. It is
such a joy to be able to print to either printer without having to get up
and change the switch on a switch box (or even print to both at the same
time if I want to)!

According to the documentation, however:

This printer has several connectivity options:

* USB cable
* Parallel cable
* Network

Under Network:

The printer can be connected to a network in one of two ways:

* The printer can be connected directly to a computer on a network.

* The printer can be connected to a network with an HP JetDirect Print
Server or an HP WP110 Wireless Print Server.

So it sounds to me as if you should be able to use it as a network printer
when connected to a specific machine.

Suzanne

Many thanks for your help on this.

The fact is that I have the printer connected to a 98SE and access it from
the XP through a router. It works slowly.

But the problem is with Word 2002 which keeps closing saying that it found a
problem and asks if I want to inform MS. It then tells me that the problem
is with the Printer driver.

A few people have told me that the HP 6122 does not support anything other
than USB and Parallel cable, meaning, I suppose, that the RJ 45 (or whatever
the cable is called) thta goes to the router is not supported.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Thank you

qim

I'm totally clueless about networks of any kind, but perhaps someone else
here is more knowledgeable?

If you are trying to add a printer as a local printer under Windows XP,
network options don't enter into it. The first dialog box in the add printer
wizard gives the choice of installing as local or network. If installing
locally (ie the printer is to be connected to the Windows XP machine)
uncheck the automatically detect box if the printer isn't physically
present.

To connect a network printer you must enter the printer address or allow
Windows to locate it. It should then install the drivers it needs locally.
The network should take care of the routeing. The printer itself is not
connected to the network, it is connected to the Win98 PC. It is the *PC*
that is connected to the network.

Hello Graham

Sorry to go on and on...

I now have two icons in the Printer's section in each computer.

The local icon to each computer has an updated driver I have just downloaded
from the net.

The sharing icon, I did not touch, though it is the onw that's presenting
problems to Word 2002.

My question: should I update the drivers on the sharing icon? update the XP
driver on the XP computer and the 98SE driver on the main computer that's
attached to the printer?

I'm worried that with 2 different drivers at each end the newtworking side
of printing will complain.

Thanks for your help

qim

It is the driver on the local machine that is important. The one in Windows
98 is only relevant if the printer is causing problems when used from that
machine.
