When setting up a XPP workstation and setting up the
printers I go thru the normal printer setup using the
same drivers that I have used on 10 other networked XPP
workstations. The printer setup goes thru copying the
necessary files and when it get to the end of the
Installation I get the above error. This is workstation
specific. Security ?? updated Reg. files?

What make and model of printer? Is Windows XP Service Pack 1 installed?

Is this a "network printer" or a "local printer"?

Yes Service Pack 1 is installed, it was preinstalled.
Printers are HP 5, Tektronix 750N, both are networked and
the drivers are not corrupted. they Test fine on other
XPP workstations. I tried to install as a local printer
same result.

The reason I asked about SP1 is because prior to SP1 we had no problems with
normal users connecting to network printers (and thus installing the printer
drivers).

However, after SP1 was installed, with no changes on the print server, we
discovered that for some printer models, users could not connect to those
network printers - other models did not have this problem.

We found that we had to logon at the workstation as an administrator to
complete the driver installation. We use the technique explained at
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterAllUsers.htm. What we now do is
add the printer (remotly, globally), then use Remote Desktop Connection to
logon (remotely) to the workstation as an administrator. The driver
installation completes and the administrator logs off. After that any user
if that computer can use the printer.

We don't have any printers of either of the models you identified, so I
don't know for sure if this is the same issue or not. I think this issue
arises because some (but not all) printer driver install processes create
additional folders in the system32\spool\drivers\w32x86 folder.

Local printer installs can only be done by administrators - ordinary users
can't do that.
