I need to download a new printer driver, and I'm prompted
for a location. I think it needs to go someplace where
the operating system can find it, but I can't find other
recognizable drivers on my system, so I don't know where
to put this new driver.
Is there a more or less standard location in Win XP for
drivers to lurk?
Are thiere no instruction on the site whiere you are downloading from?
It is usual for a downloaded driver file to be a compressed file, it will be
iether a self-extracting executable (*.exe) or a zip file (*.zip).
Above being the case then it would be best to download it to your 'Desktop'
where you can see it and what type it is.
If it is a self-extracting compressed file (*.exe) then double-click it and
it will iether give a default where it wants to put it's extracted files
(possibly temp-folder), or it will give a default of where it is now
(desktop).
If it is a zip file (*.zip) then you need to right-click the file and select
'Extract All', a folder at your present location (desktop) will be created
that may or may not contain an executable file to install the driver,
otherwise the device installation will hopefully find the folder or need to
be directed thiere. Thiere may also be a readme file in the newly created
folder on your desktop.
Giveing a more direct answer to your question, a self-extracting compressed
file will often extract to a standard 'temp' folder where it will stay until
the driver is installed, after which it will be obsolete and probably
deleted on next reboot.
Sorry this is all so long but thiere are different ways that 'drivers' are
supplied, anyway I hope that I have been of some help.
