Printer doesn't print

John

I have an Epson inkjet color 600 which I've been using
with a Windows XP driver (that comes with XP) happily.
Someone deleted the printer and now Windows XP wont
automatically detect it and install the driver. I've
therefore manually installed the printer instead (using
the XP wizard) and the installation is fine installing
the driver for me. Device manager tells me this device is
working properly on the printer parallel port LPT1 (it's
not a USB printer). The printer is listed under
the 'printers and faxes' in control panel as the default
ptinter and there are no other printers on the system.

Everything appears fine.

I then try to print something (I've tried all manner of
things to print) whereby nothing happens...... ???? I
don't get any error messages and the printer screen with
all its options disappears after pressing print as it
should do. Even the printer tray icon comes up in the
bottom right hand corner as it should do for a split
second. Everything runs perfectly except for one thing.
The printer does nothing!!!

I am a competent computer user and have asked people in
chat rooms already. This is my last line of hope or else
I'll have to buy a new printer.

P.S. The printer isn't broken (it works on my neighbours'
computer) and I cant get a driver from Epson as the
printer is too old and besides I know that the XP driver
works as I've been using it for 13 months with no problem.

Navigate to Control Panel Printers and faxes. Highlight the printer and
select Delete this printer from the left window.

Next shut off the printer and computer in the usual way. Remove the parallel
cable from the computer and printer. If possible, replace the cable with an
IEEE certified parallel cable. If not, test the cable on another
printer/computer and reuse only if OK.

Switch on the printer and then the computer. Let the computer start Windows.
Hopefully the printer will detect the printer and install the software.

If not, check Control Panel System Hardware Device manager and check
for yellow ! or red x through the listing for Lpt1. If present, this will
have to be fixed before proceeding. Let us know.

If OK, run the add printer wizard. Check Local printer attached to this
computer and uncheck Automatically detect and install me plug and play
printer. Next Select Lpt1 Next. Select Epson from left and Epson
Stylus Color Ecp/2 from right. next. ... finish the install. Try
printing

Let us know.
