printer crashing

When I print say 10 pages of `word document` my printer (epson color 460)
prints 2 pages and then starts to print garbage on the rest of the pages and
keeps putting pages through the printer til it runs out. If I only print 2
at a time then all is ok.
If I check the CPU usage (in the task managaer) it is running at 100% while
printing so I am thinking this is all too much for either the printer or the
computer.

Is there a solution for this as its a pain printing just 2 pages at atime,
also if I reduce the copies to `draft` then it prints all ok.

help appreciated.
thanks

Are you using USB or Centronics/Parallel interface

What type of computer (MAc or PC)

What operating system Win 98/ 98SE, 2000, ME, XP etc?

Make sure you have adequate defragmented hard drive space for the print
spooler location.

Using USB with PC system Win XP pro. Pc has been defragmented with approx
75% free space on hard drive.

Hi Juco,

A few things to look at:

1) XP places the printer spooler on the C: drive/partition. So make
sure you have a clear area for it there. If you have other things also
occurring on that drive (virtual memory, any scratch disk, etc), it may
be crowding the space on that drive

2) Is the USB connection direct to the computer or through a hub? Epson
printers do not play well with non-powered hubs. Try connecting it
directly with the computer USB interface. If that resolves it, get a
powered hub.

3) Interrupted data streams can cause this type of problem. This is
supposed to be controlled by the USB chip set on your mainboard. Some
older mainboards which use older VIA chip sets can be unknown to cause
problems,. Make sure your driver set for SUB is up to date if you fit
this category.

4) Try removing the Epson driver fully, and reinstall with the latest
version available.

5) Check both Epson and MS FAQ and knowledge bases to see if either
indicate a known problem with this combination.
