HOW TO: Set Up and Share a Printer That Connects to a Network-Interface
Print Device in Windows Server 2003
SUMMARY
This article discusses how to set up a printer that connects to a
network-interface print device on a computer that runs a Windows Server
2003 operating system, and then share that printer with other Windows users.
Set Up a Printer That Connects to a Network-Interface Print Device
1. Log on to your Windows Server 2003-based computer as an administrator.
2. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
3. Double-click Add Printer.
4. In the Add Printer Wizard, click Next.
5. Click Local printer attached to this computer, click to clear the
Automatically Detect and Install my Plug and Play Printer check box, and
then click Next.
6. Click Create a New Port, click Standard TCP/IP Port in the list, and
then click Next.
7. In the Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard, click Next.
8. Type the Internet Protocol (IP) address or the Domain Name System (DNS)
name of the network-interface print device, and then click Next.
NOTE: If you provide an IP address, Windows automatically supplies a
suggested port name for the print device.
9. Click Finish.
10. On the Install Printer Software page, click the manufacturer and model
of the printer, and then click Next.
11. Type a name for the printer, and then click Next.
12. Click Do not share this printer, and then click Next.
13. Type a location and comment (this step is optional), and then click
Next.
NOTE: If your computer is part of a domain, users can search directory
services in Active Directory for the information that you type in the
Location and Comment boxes.
14. Click Next.
15. Click Finish.
NOTE: Windows can either copy files from the Windows folder on your hard
disk or display the Files Needed dialog box. The dialog box prompts you for
the location of the Windows distribution files. If Windows displays the
Files Needed dialog box, insert the Windows Server 2003 CD, and then wait
for about 10 seconds. Click OK to close the Insert Disk dialog box.
Share a Printer
1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
2. Right-click the printer that you want to share, and then click
Properties.
3. Click Sharing.
4. Click Share this printer, and then click OK.
