Hi:
Since getting this new XP machine I cannot print to file.
I check the approiate box on the printer dialogue or I
use a virtual Postscript printer set to a file port but
no result. When I look to where I've sent the file -
NADA. This problem is in all applications from Word to
Adobe Pagemaker. Prior to this I performed this functions
100s of times in Win98SE. Any help sure appreciated.

Does the file port have a fully qualified name, incl. the drive letter ? If
not, it's considered a relative path to whatever the "current" directory is,
which may vary depending on what other options you use (may be the
spooler's, maybe the app's current directory).

As far as the other questions go on "what do I do with the file I get from
print-to-file ?": the only thing you can reliably do is send that file to
the printer model whose driver was used in creating the file, with identical
settings (such as how much memory installed etc.). In some other cases, e.g.
if a PostScript driver was used, there may be ways of looking at the
content, but it really depends.

Hi Robert:
Thank you for your prompt reply. I will further check out
the port configuration. When printing to file I create
postscript files for use by Adobe Distiller. (this makes
for a more controlled .pdf file vs. using a print to .pdf
function) The resulting Acrobat file goes to a commercial
printer. I have been in contact with folks on the Adobe
support group and since this problem exists across all
applications, they think it is an XP problem. I am
inclined to agree since Word will also not print to file.
I have the feeling that the fix may be something real
simple.
