Hello all,

How do I set up print to file in XP pro? If I try to add printer it lets me
add print to file as a port but then asks for a specific printer to be
installed and I cant bypass that point.

Any thoughts?

TIA.

When you print to file, the file is formatted for printing on a specific
printer. While it may not be universal, every printer driver I have used has
had a print to file option.

Suggest you install the printer that you intend to use to print the file.
The you should have a print to file option when you select File, Print.

Printing to a file sends the same data to the file as it would to
an actual printer. That means it has to know what printer will be
used (eventually) to print the file, so it can provide the proper
format for it.

What are you trying to do? Why do you want to print to a file and
what will you use the file for?

This will be for say, adding graphics files from progs that wont let you
"save as" to email etc. I seem to remember that it was available on
previous versions of Windows.

Sorry, I'm not following. How does "Print to File" help you? Can
you be more specific, please.

In general, a file that you've created with Print to File can not
subsequently be read. All you can do with it is send it to the
printer.

The exception to that is if you define it as a Generic printer.
What such a file looks like, I don't know for sure; I've never
done that, but you can try it and see if it helps you.

The image wont save as, but can be printed, so wanted to try print to file
as a way around this but if it cant be then used the same as a saved file
then I going about things the wrong way.

George.

Yes your are.
What program are you using that will not permit a "Save As"?
Or, are you saying that you want to save as in a format that is not
supported by your image program?

If the latter is the case, what program are you using and what format do you
want to save the image?

The program is a parts database for automobiles the program sorts and
searches the database of mainly tiff images (held in a multi directory
format 119,899 files 4,344 folders 5.97gig total). If I read the image # and
then search for that file I can then do all the usual things with it. But
the program wont let me right click and save as or send to. Its only the
fact that the images have the file number on them that lets me find the
file, the programme doesn't inform me of the file #. So by trying to print
to file rather than a printer I was trying to save the image locally to then
email to others etc.

*snip*

George,

Sounds like your program is a bespoke program and not Internet Explorer
or someother browser?

If yes ... the easiest ways I can think of to email that photo to
someone will be as follows:

1. Assuming the image is on the screen, then press Alt-PrtScn keys.
This will put the contents of the current program (the program
displaying the picture) in the clipboard. If your email can directly
accept the paste of the is graphic into email, then do it. If your
eamil can't, then open up Paint Program paste the image into it and save
as a file. Then send the file via emai.

(note: if you like and use this clipboard approach, you may like to buy
a copy of SnagIt! which is a terrific utilty for more easily managing
screen shots like this (including editing, saving in different formats,
etc.) It's only about US$40. I use it all the time and well worth the
money to me.

2. Another way would be if by chance the knowledge of the filenumber
actually gives you the full file name of the image. You can try that if
you use Internet Explorer to File/Open that file. IE will display the
TIF image if it can get to it. If you have access to the full file,
then in email attach this file and send.

3. Long shot ... get the developers of this bespoke progam to add
functionality to email the picture, or at least let you right mouse
click to save the imate.

IF you are actually using a browser to do this (I read the previous
thread and didn't spot this ... sorry, if I mis-read it and in fact you
are using a Browser) ... then something wrong with the browswer setup
and at the moment nothing comes to my mind to suggest a fix for that.

It is a bespoke program that I even have to use alt cont del to end. I
doesn't give the full file path just the page number i.e. the bit
before.tiff.
