M.L.

I loaded McAfee internet suite 6.0 on my computer and it
caused several problems and now I can not set of printers,
Print Subsystem unavailable. I went through all their
steps to get rid of it and reinstall the McAfee virus Scan
online 8.0 and now that gives me an error components of
active shield missing. McAfee told me it is a
Microsoft/Dell problem My system is Windows 2000
professional NT Technology (computer Dell). HELP!!

Thanks.
ML

Cari:
Thanks but it did not work. Any other suggestions?
When I open my printer folder and click on add printer the
message says "printer operation cannot continue due to
lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable."
When I went to command promt and entered to start net
spooler it gave me a 1077 error. The print spooler
service could not be started. No attempts to start the
service have been made since the last boot.
I have no idea what this means.

Thanks again.

M.L.

ML,
I'm right there with you and have no clue where to go. I
went to Computer Management (My Computer>Manage>Services
and Applications>Services) and couldn't even find the
print spooler service. hope somebody has a clue.

DJBJ

not a clue on why you do not see Print Spooler. The sc (service control)
command might give you something

sc query spooler

SERVICE_NAME: spooler
TYPE : 110 WIN32_OWN_PROCESS (interactive)
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, ACCEPTS_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0

If the spooler was removed sc should return error 1060

sc query noservice
[SC] EnumQueryServicesStatus:OpenService FAILED 1060:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

this is what the 1077 error means
winerror 1077
1077 ERROR_SERVICE_NEVER_STARTED <--> No NTSTATUS matched

Look for spl and shd files in \windows\system32\spool\printers. Copy the
files to another location and clean out this directory.

now attempt to start the spooler service.

If it starts up, one of the files is causing the spooler service to fail.
If you only have a couple of files, I am very interested in the print driver
involved and the spl,shd file that is causing the failure.

Your problem is fairly unique. Most do not get system error 1077. Many of
the spooler shutdown problems revolve around a failure in the print driver
either due to corruption in the driver files or poor use of memory
allocations.

I do not think this is related to an update unless a print driver is reliant
on some security hole that has now been filled. But after you run
cleanspl.exe or manually expunge the registry of the print driver data, the
spooler will start.

If you would like to pursue this until it starts working, I will gladly work
with you but I'd rather do this out of the newsgroup and post the resolution
once we figure out the issue.

I'd say the spooler doesn't know where the spool folder is,
or can't open it. Its in a registry entry called
DefaultSpoolDirectory at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\Print\Printers

Possible problems involving this entry are:

The path does not exist
The path has a backslash at the end
Registry key permissions
Spool directory permissions
Unicode vs ansi text in key entry
The HKLM registry hive you are looking at belongs to
a terminal session

From the server console, you can change the directory in
server properties in the printers folder under the printer
menu. Also, make sure the print spooler service is using
the localsystem account and can interact with the desktop.

Well, no luck. I went through the instructions and when I
try to net start the spooler I get:

"The Print Spooler service could not be started. A system
error has occured. System error 1077 has occured. No
attempts to start the service have been made since the
last boot."

Any other suggestions?

I really appreicate your help. If I take this to be fix
all they want to do is reload the OS which i am trying to
avoid.

Thanks.

Hi Allan:

I verified all the drivers are there. I am going to
follow the instructions you referred me to:

How to clean up print drivers. I will let you know what
happens.

Thanks again.

in \windows\system32\ are the core spooler components

localspl.dll
win32spl.dll
winspool.drv
spoolss.dll
spoolsv.exe

verify these files exist

print drivers cause the majority of spooler failures. Either follow the
instructions for cleaning out the drivers or you can
pick
up cleanspl.exe todirections
and do NOT delete
the system printer port monitors.

I have had a similar issue with this. Check this out to see if this
works for all of you, it worked for me.

On my computer, a standard installation, go the the directory;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS

In there I had two files, one of them being a swf file. Delete both of
these files, or rename them with the .old extension if you would like
but relocate them to another directory all the same, and restart you
computer.

That's it. When the computer restarts, all is well in the world of MS.

Hope that this helps some of you. Microsoft wont even acknoledge that
this is an issue. WTF!
