"Print Subsystem Unavailable" error message

As one or two other people posted recently, I'm getting
the following error message when I try to Add a
Printer: "Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of
resources. The Print subsystem is unavailable.". This
all started when I was trying to print a document in
Acrobat 5.0, and after I cancelled the print job, Acrobat
crashed. After I got Acrobat running again and tried to
print, I was notified I needed to choose a printer. What
had happened was that all my printer definitions were
lost, and now I can't add any.

Any ideas on what's going on? I'm running Windows 2000 v.
5.00.2195 (Service Pack 4) on a Toshiba Tecra 8200 laptop
(v. 1.6 BIOS).

Thanks,
Paul Fini

Quick temporary fix - The Print Spooler Service has
stopped. Go to Computer Management, services and start
the Print Spooler (may need to be restarted again). We
have been experiencing the problem for over 6 months now
and even working with Microsoft with still no solution in
sight.

Hi,

I had that problem a lot on my Windows 2000 clients. In the end I
found it was caused by conflicting versions of HP Laserjet drivers, eg
if a client had a mix of HP PCL5e, HP PCL6 and Windows native drivers
print spooler crashes were common.

Removing all drivers and then only adding back on one type was the fix
to my issues.

Kris,

I had a similar error message and found that the printer
driver became corrupted. Try installing the printer
driver over again.
