PROBLEM:
Print jobs take up to 60 minutes for 10 page document
Even 1 page documents take as long as 10 minutes

SYSTEM:
XP Pro laptop

Connected with RJ-45 (6 wire) MS peer-to-peer network
through Link Sys Router

Win98 SE Desktop

with USB connection to

HP5550 printer

COMMENTS:
Happened with XP Home before upgrade to XP Pro
Printing causes Win98 SE to be "tied up"
mouse movements are 'jerky'
98 SE system slow to respond

Any ideas how to narrow this down?

Thanks,
Dave in NJ

Hi Cari,

Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure what you mean
by 'print direct'. I checked the XP help, I did a search
of the www.mvps.com website, the MS website, and the
Internet. The Internet returned 17000 replies; I read
the first 5 pages; and the only thing I found was a
utility written in 2000.

If you mean connect the printer to the system - then No,
I haven't tried a direct USB connection. I didn't want
to change anything that might make the solution more
difficult.

I certainly can do it, if you feel it might help resolve
the problem.

Go to the Control Panel and click on Printers & Faxes....

Right click on the printer in question and select Properties.

Click on the Advanced tab.

Look in the middle section.

The default would be : Spool print documents so program finishes printing
faster
and Start printing immediately

If this is what is checked, check the box Print Directly to Printer
instead and see if it improves your problem

Hi Cari,

I am unable to change the setting either as you indicate,
or by going to the printer directly, XP states "Printer
settings could not be saved. Operation could not be
completed."

The printer window title is hp deskjet 5550 series - Use
Printer Offline.

I am able to print a test page from the properties
General Tab, however.

I'm comfortable communicating this way, but wonder if e-
mail you direct would be better for you.

Again, I really appreciate your help , and look forward
to you next suggestion.

Cari,

I did see the check for Use Printer Offline. But I've
tried to uncheck it, and it won't uncheck.
