Print spooler sucks system resources dry!

For the past few days, the print spooler on my XP computer has been going
crazy! Everything bogs down to the point that programs crash because the
spooler is using 98-100% of the CPU constantly. As soon as I stop the spooler
process through task manager, all the programs work fine. But the spooler
starts up again and so goes the dance. I have received no error messages.

So I ask, 1) what is going on with that thing? and 2) how do I fix it?!
I am running XP w/ SP2 & all critical updates installed on a Dell 1.8ghz
system, an HP printer and it's firewalled and anti-virused (ZoneLabs).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

click on start then go to control panel then click
printer & other hardware. click on the printer that
you are using then click properties.
 
That didn't work. When I restarted the computer, the spooler was up at 98%
usage again. It took a LONG time to get the driver installed with the spooler
running, but it was there. I rebooted again for grins & the spooler was still
going crazy.

Any other ideas?

I have had certain spyware programs cause this problem. The spoolsvc.exe in
Task Manager might not be what you think it is. Try SpyBot, Adaware, CW
Shredder, or Windows Malicious Software tool to scan for spyware. I can't
remember which piece of malicious code causes this, but I have seen it make
spoolsvc rocket to 98% or 99% CPU utilization. You may have to repair the
TCP/IP services after performing a sweep for malicious code. URL for

move the spl and shd files to another location

start the print spooler process.
