Print Security

I have a user that has a Power Point document that won't print. We've tried
printing to various different printers and it just won't print. It's quite
large (40 pages). I can watch it go on our print server, the whole document
spools and then just disappears, like it would if it was printing.

Where can I check for hidden permissions, security properties, etc.

Hi Emily

A few questions for you: what version of PowerPoint are you using? Does it
have all updates? Have you tried printing one page at a time? Have you tried
printing in a different format (e.g. outline or handouts)? Is the user having
problems printing from other programmes? Can the user print a different
presentation? Can a different user print the presentation? Can you tell I
used to work on a helpdesk? ;-)

The only thing I could find on the ppt faq was about not being able to print
one particular slide due to an image extending over the edge (fixed by
cropping image). As far as I'm aware printing cannot be restricted by
security settings like it can be in acrobat for example.

Let us know how you get on.

Answers:
what version of PowerPoint are you using? 2003 SP2

Does it have all updates? Yes

Have you tried printing one page at a time? Yes, no luck

Have you tried printing in a different format (e.g. outline or handouts)?
No, good idea, we'll try that.

Is the user having problems printing from other programmes? No, other
programs print to that printer fine.

Can the user print a different presentation? Yes

Can a different user print the presentation? One other person has tried and
couldn't. They won't send to me because it's highly confidential. I know
limits my troubleshooting ability.

Can you tell I used to work on a helpdesk? ;-) Yes! :)

The only thing I could find on the ppt faq was about not being able to print
one particular slide due to an image extending over the edge (fixed by
cropping image). Thanks, if they let me look at it, I'll try that.

As far as I'm aware printing cannot be restricted by security settings like
it can be in acrobat for example. That's what I thought, too.

The only other thing I can think of is that the file is corrupted somehow.

They could also try inserting the slides into a new presentation: Create new
presentation->Insert->Slides from file->Browse to file->Insert all (probably
best to make sure 'keep source fomatting' is unticked).

Good luck!

Another thing to try (assuming it is some kind of corruption) is round-
tripping:

HTML "Round-tripping" to repair corruption
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00526.htm

Or perhaps the file is so confidential that the printer isn't even
allowed to see it:-)
