This may be the stupidest question ever, but how does the "print screen" work
on Vista? I've tried every possible thing with Shift, Ctrl, Alt..... Still
seeking the resolution.

this is a programmign group - but to answer your question -

its Alt-PrintScreen - and it puts the pictuer of your desktop into your
clipboard to be pasted anywhere.

Now, if you have a laptop - you probably have to hit something like
Alt+FunctionKey+Printscreen, if the printscreen button is on a 'secondary
button'

Ctl-PrtScn gets the entire desktop
Alt-PrtScn gets the active top-level window

Some keyboards (like mine) you need to turn FLock off to get at the PrtScn.

wow....alt+function key+printscreen works!
they say for vista there's a snipping tool for capturing a window...but i
couldn't find it either.

thanks a lot for the alt+fn+prtsc.
