Print problem

Hello,

Ive recendly installed a windows 2000 server with 2 macs connected to it.
file sharing works perfectly fine. and the printers ive shared are
selectable in the chooser.
when ik click on the shared printer the mac tryes to connect and asks for a
ppd file.
ive chosen a standard hp III ppd to print to the laserjet 6
i see the printjob being sent to the spooler on the windows 2000 server and
then it disapears.
nothig is printed.
this problem is with all the 3 printers connected to the server ( hp deskjet
1220c, hp laserjet 6p, hp deskjet 930 )
i know that these printers arend postscript printers but when i connect the
printers to the mac with the usb interface all works fine ( so i gues that
it also has to work on a network )

the server is installed with sp4 is this the problem ? or the fact that
these arend postscript printers ??

Hi Jos!

You have a couple of issues going on here.

First, when Macs print across a network, they send Postscript information.
If you're sending to non-Postscript printers then you won't have any luck.
When the Macs print locally via USB, the printing information is being
processed by the Mac itself before going to the printer. Postscript is
expected to be processed after it arrives at the printer.

You can work around the issue of sending Postscript over the network by
using Gimp-Print and Ghostscript found at Sourceforge.net
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/. This will work with Mac OS X and convert
the Postscript information into a form that can be sent through a Windows
print queue. All of these printers are supported to a degree (some are fully
operational and some are simply operational).

The other issue is one that I've heard of but never dealt with is Windows
2000 server and sp4. I've heard from postings in this group and
acknowledgements by Microsoft staff that this can cripple Mac Print
Services. Downgrading to sp3 is the only answer to date.

the macs whe use are installed with mac os9
is there another tool for this os version ???

Hi Jos!

To my knowledge, this software will only work on Mac OS X and not on Mac OS
9. I didn't see any solutions offered for Mac OS 9 on the Sourceforge
website.

If these printers are USB printers, you could try connecting them to another
Mac OS 9 system and use USB Printer Sharing.

Someone else here may be able to offer some better solutions, but I'm pretty
sure your options are fairly limited.
