Is it possible to print to an HP printer connected to a machine running ME
(desktop) from a machine running XP Home (laptop)?

Yes.

On the ME machine, enable printer and file sharing. See the help system
on the ME system on how to turn this on.

On the XP machine, add a network printer. See the help system on the XP
system for details on how to do this.

Let us know.

I have already done that. My problem is that the printer hangs on the ME
machine when I print from XP. Sorry for not being more specific.

On the Win Me machine, check spooler settings in Windows and background
printing setting in Word. Turn background printing off; turn the spooler
off by checking the setting to print directly to the printer. Exit out.
Try printing. Let us know.

The spooler setting to print directly to the printer is grayed out. Changing
the setting in Word has no effect. Before making the change, I found I was
able to print from other applications, but of course the one I need to print
from hangs the printer. This specific application loaded on the ME machine
prints fine, unfortunately, the laptop has no parallel port to connect
directly to the printer to see if the application would print from the
laptop. This may have become an application specific problem, but any other
Ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

And what is the application you need that will not print through the
network to the printer attached to the Windows ME machine? I was
assuming it was Word but I see you really did not state it's name.

Thanks for the information. If you have not already, you might want to
consider posting the problem to their news group and to a Windows
Networking group. I'm still looking but I am a beginner with networks
myself.

Hi Tom,

I switched the HP Printer to be the default printer and printed without
previewing the document first. The print went through! It also worked with
previewing first. After I switched the default back to the other printer, I
was still able to print. Hopefully, whatever was causing the problem is gone
forever.

Thanks for following up,
Dan

Yep.. Just got to install the drivers on both system as
OS if Different..

If XP is host the Printer.. change the workgroups to
match or ensure the guest account is active..
